The Leadership Advantage in the Age of AI Is More Human Than You Think

As AI becomes more capable, it is tempting to assume that leadership will become increasingly technical.

Leaders certainly need a working understanding of the technology shaping their organisation, but the most important leadership advantage may be something else entirely.

It may be the ability to remain deeply human while work changes around us.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that AI and big data are among the fastest growing skills. At the same time, leadership and social influence, resilience, flexibility, creative thinking and collaboration remain critical. This is not a choice between technical skills and human skills. Organisations need both.

AI can generate an answer. Leaders still own the decision

AI can summarise information, identify patterns, develop options and challenge our thinking. What it cannot do is carry organisational accountability or fully understand every human consequence of a decision.

Leaders must still ask:

  • Is the information reliable and complete?

  • Whose perspective may be missing?

  • What assumptions are shaping this recommendation?

  • How will this decision affect our people and customers?

  • Is the outcome consistent with our values?

This requires critical thinking and judgement, particularly when an AI generated response appears polished and confident. The easier it becomes to produce an answer, the more important it becomes to evaluate that answer well.

Change needs meaning, not just instruction

Employees are experiencing AI in very different ways. Some see opportunity. Others feel uncertainty about their role, capability or future. Many feel both at the same time.

A leader who focuses only on efficiency may miss the emotional and practical questions their team is carrying. People want to understand what is changing, why it matters, what will remain valued and how they will be supported.

Strong leaders create this meaning through honest communication. They do not pretend to have every answer. They share what is known, acknowledge what is still emerging and invite their people into the process of learning and experimentation.

That transparency builds trust, and trust creates the conditions in which people are more willing to try new ways of working.

Curiosity is becoming a leadership discipline

In a period of rapid change, experience remains valuable, but relying only on what worked before can become a limitation. Leaders need the confidence to say, “I don’t know yet, but let’s explore it.”

Curious leaders:

  • ask better questions before choosing a solution

  • seek perspectives that challenge their assumptions

  • test ideas on a manageable scale

  • treat feedback as useful data

  • create space for reflection, not just action

This is not indecision. It is disciplined learning, and it helps organisations adapt without chasing every new trend.

Inclusion must remain part of the conversation

AI enabled change will not feel the same for everyone. Differences in role, confidence, access, language, neurotype and previous experience can shape how readily people engage.

A single approach to communication or training will leave some people behind. Inclusive leadership means providing clarity in different formats, making learning accessible, offering more than one way to participate and checking whether the pace of change is creating unintended barriers.

It also means involving the people closest to the work. Their insight can reveal risks, customer impacts and process realities that are invisible at a strategic level.

The future leader is both confident and adaptable

The leaders who thrive will not be those who predict every change correctly. They will be those who can create clarity when the path is uncertain, make responsible decisions with imperfect information and help people grow through change.

AI will continue to expand what organisations can do. Leadership determines how thoughtfully, inclusively and effectively that capability is used.

The more powerful the technology becomes, the more deliberate we need to be about the human experience around it.
